Mondays are gonna be like T.G.I.M!! And Tuesdays are gonna be my only weekend.
Today was good. No plans. Actually yes I did have a plan - which was to rot at home. Eat whatever I can and sleep whenever I feel tired.
I even caught those Taiwanese hokkien drama on TV in the morning and watched Channel 8's 9pm drama. It sparked my interest when my mom told me it is based on true events in Singapore, such as the "Spyros disaster" in 1978 (shipyard explosion) and the collapse of the Hotel New World in 1986. These were new to me as none was mentioned in our textbooks. Or at least, I wasn't particularly interested in history.
The Spyros was a Greek tanker that exploded at the Jurong Shipyard. I first saw the footages on TV from a series of LKY tribute. My mom was telling me how lucky it was that my grandfather quitted his job there at the shipyard before the explosion happened. How close.
The former Hotel New World was located at the junction of Serangoon Road and Owen Road. It was a 6-storey high building with a bank on the ground floor. Imagine the human traffic. My mom was telling me details about the building and immediately, I "witnessed" it from the drama itself. It just felt so real all of a sudden.
For me who grew up and lived in Singapore after these unfortunate events, I never got to learn about this part of the history. The more I know about my home. And also to appreciate and be thankful for what we have today.
*& do you realise Singapore rarely experience blackouts now? When I was younger, it happened pretty often that my mom would prepare candles and torches for instances like this.
