Since young, having long nails is a luxury. I started learning piano in 1998 and ever since then, it is a must to keep my nails short. I trim my nails AT LEAST once a week, and more whenever I feel sian from homework and my break time was usually spent on trimming my nails.
My habit is to trim off the excessive white tip. Sometimes, even have blood oozing out...
I never knew the feeling of having long nails until I was at Xi'An visiting Amanda while she was there for internship. Amanda treated me to manicure (her WEEKLY routine likka queen only) and that was the first time I got my cuticles trimmed away. Finally, my nails were painted in PINK with tiny floral patterns in WHITE !! My nails were so long and I felt slightly more feminine.
Then came all my parcels... Days of ripping parcels with the chopper (no pen-knife/scissors) with my nails intact for 2 weeks before I got really annoyed by the inconvenience and trimmed my nails short. A pity I didn't get a photo of my long nails. But you can see my short nails with the durable pink polish on my blogger profile picture on the right side... Here's a bigger one.

When I was in HK watching Master Chef with a little boozer. |
Shanghai > Xi'An > Hong Kong > Singapore. After my holidays in Hong Kong, I came back to Singapore and resumed playing piano, which means, no long nails for me.
Got my certs in hand and ever since the minute I got out of Mr Ng's studio for the very last time in December, I did not touch the piano at all and started growing my nails again!! Shaped my nails in the rectangular shape I always wanted so exciting! When I did manicure in Xi'an, the manicurist did oval shape for me without my consent. This time round as I was in SG, manicure is quite expensive so everything was Do-it-myself.
I watched some youtube tutorial videos and decided to do a modified french mani on my own.

I kind of like the slight ombre I accidentally achieved on the pinkie nail |
Was quite happy for a few days before my nails started causing inconvenience in my life. Sometimes, I would accidentally scratch my face when I wash up. It's also quite annoying to hear my nails scratch against a netball whenever I do a pass. I can't really bake because the dough will end up getting stuck in my nails. Whenever I apply sunblock/moisturiser, there will be some amount of lotion stuck in my nails. Getting a card out of my wallet is quite tough too. Can't play the piano and guitar. Can't use my finger to apply powder which means I have to reach out for the brushes, and that means I have to clean up the brushes. It is quite bad for my iphone as well because my nails are tapping on the screen instead of my finger tip. I have to dig out dirt from my nails every now and then.
Really is quite inconvenient. But of course, some things became easier. It was more shiok to wash and scrub my scalp with my long nails. I can also peel an orange without using a knife. I think that's all though.
After netball training today, when I felt really restricted with my passes because I was afraid of chipping my nail, I've made a decision to trim it short. I think I suit short nails better. The activities I chose to commit to are those which require short nails. And I feel so much comfortable without the excess white nail tip jutting out.
So relieved. It's like snipping a head of long hair away. But of course I won't snip my hair short lol. Once bitten twice shy HAHA.
Now that I have short nails, it's time to spend some time with the much neglected piano and guitar!
