Costa Rica Day 12: First morning shift!

I'm typing at the Hatchery now. My shift started at 6am and I got down to the station slightly earlier to get some wifi.

6am wasn't that bad because it was still chilly outside. But now its 8.26am and it's super hot liao.

I got some photos of the hatchery :)

The hatchery.

The cannister that marks a turtle nest.

Hello friend, during my morning Hatchery shift

Apparently, we found Tasha at the hatchery because she forgot her phone when she got back to the station. And had to walk back to the hatchery again to get it back. There's no wifi at the hatchery, so she has to go back personally to get it. And she just crashed there with Daniel and Courtney (they were on shifts from 12mn-6am). Daniel said another nests of leatherbacks hatched and more of the previous leatherback nest hatched again. Gg mama, no wonder Tasha crashed at the hatchery. Cray night.

I'll have breakfast when I get home later after this shift and nap for a bit before waking up for lunch and at 2pm, we've got a biological ecological yada yada talk at the station. And gotta go back to sleep and recharge for a patrolling shift from 12mn-5am. Sincerely hope to see an adult leatherback coming onshore to lay eggs! That's gonna be really exciting!

And I'm not looking forward to Monday's morning activities after I end my midnight shift. Gonna look like a zombie.

After my shift I went back home for breakfast and omg, it looks like lunch. It's the tortilla wrap with cheese that's of firm tofu texture, and also some panfried plantains. No coffee but had lemon fresca instead. Sad me. What's breakfast without coffee? But I still ate so much and went to take a nap straight after. I was really damn full cos I was quite hungry during my shift.

Woke up and it was lunch time before heading to the station for sea turtles information session. Omg, the weather was so bloody hot it's not within my tolerable range. Worse than Thailand and gold coast. I can't even... It's just the sweat just kept flowing out and I couldn't breathe properly. The feeling is gross really. And lunch wasn't too helpful either. Host mom cooked spicy soup. It wasn't really spicy, but the soup was hot. And the weather was hot. Nnd. And I was still full from breakfast.

But I tried to finish the food because there was a lot and I don't want to waste food/ waste her efforts in cooking. I tried my best. Even though didn't finish the whole thing, I think I have about 1/5 left. I was so full to the extent that I wanna burst!!! Plus the cray shitass weather!! Not helping omg!!!!! I so wanna leave!!!!!

But anyway, the presentation was in the small library which has air conditioning!!! Thank goodness for that. They also showed us a video where they dissected a leatherback (which was dead from kena knocked into by a motorboat) omg the images were so gross. For example, they separated the head and studied what's inside his mouth. And his digestive system - they studied how leatherback's jellyfish diet can keep them going and grow to their ginormous size. Leatherbacks are the biggest sea turtle species in the world and can be up to 2m long! Cray right!

Omg, and the penis was super duper long and dangling. Those researchers were also laughing at the penis as they were too shocked by the actual length. The penis can be stored under the shell, or when sexually aroused, they can show themselves lol.

It's also quite depressing to know that only 1 out of 1000 baby turtles would survive into adulthood. And even when mother turtles lay their eggs, they'll have to leave the eggs on their own and never come back again. It's such commitment without attachment.

Anyway, I slept at the station so well after that. It's so much better than my room which was so stuffy and hot!!!! :( at the station, I just lie on the wooden planks on the ground and fell asleep. The next time I woke up it's already 5.20pm hahaha!!! My eating and sleeping pattern is screwed!!!!! Just because of one super early shift, and one midnight shift..

Just got the roster out for next week, and everyday is midnight shift!!! there's one 6am-9am shift and 6pm-12mn shift ON THE SAME DAY!!!! WTHBBQ. booohooooo. Plus morning activities. gg mama. But I can't wait to get this over and done with!
