I was excited to play netball in Melbourne since Australia is considered the pioneer in the sports. All girls play netball. It's a norm.
The first training session was overwhelming it was like a boot camp. But court work was relaxing as they emphasized more on game plays rather than drills.
I'm probably the only foreign Asian who frequents training sessions and definitely the ONLY Asian in my team for Tin Alley season. It was really tough to get into their conversation and I have to repeat my words most of the time because of my weird accent. All of them are locals.
I'm glad I pressed on and stayed through the season. Thanks to my anti-social skills where I learned how to be ignorant and survive on my own. Now that I make myself present every session, they are slowly getting used to having me in the team.
It was our 2nd last game tonight. Olivia, my super tall and pretty captain organised a team dinner. This is the first time I'm having dinner with locals!! Surprising, we had Asian food, Thai food in particular. As usual, I had my pad thai fix. It was good cos they have a vegetarian option. It's weird to have corn, broccoli, carrots in pad thai but well, that's pad thai to my liking. Prawns are good, but $23.90, seriously?
Good thing is that nobody had to wait for the others to take photos of the food. NOBODY TOUCHED THEIR PHONE THROUGH DINNER. I feel obliged to leave my phone alone too. Sometimes I didn't really get what they were talking about but yay, I tried my best and glad that they are making effort to make this social team work out. Our team doesn't usually require fill-ins since our attendance to matches has been good. Same people coming in for the match every week and gradually, we learn and understand each others' style of play.
I love my team. And am very grateful that my passion did not die off.
On the other hand, I MISS SRC NETBALL GIRLS.
We used to imitate the Aussies during games they often comment, "urgh! Unlucky!" Hahhaa and now I'm hearing it so often sometimes I wanted to say that too.
