Zoukout

I've always wanted to be part of this annual party at siloso. Has been looking forward to this ever since I left my Sunday teaching job in November.

Zoukout this year was different from the previous years. In 2012, zoukout is spread across 2 days - Friday and Saturday.

I was looking forward to get the tickets but eventually decided to work since I was given the opportunity. Thanks to km, I managed to pull some strings and got selected to work at the same bar as him.

Initially I thought I would be doing some ushering or cleaning job because I'm just a temp worker and had no prior experience to the bar area. I was super excited to know that my job scope was to tap beer!!! Ok it's quite easy actually. Just like water dispenser, but the difficult part is when the foam goes out of control. And when speed is required, it's quite tough to coordinate. There were 3 taps, but I can't handle 3 taps all at the same time. Specific job scope aside, I helped out with the setting up too (just by the power of staring).

First day ended at about 4.30am, but with the cleaning up and waiting for the transport, I ended up reaching home at about 8am. It's crazy, as we had to report at 4pm later on. Km and I overslept and I was starving all the way until I reached zouk and started spamming all the coffee from the vending machine.

Upon reaching zouk, the guys changed the bar set up. Time flies. We had our dinner and waited for the crowd to stream in. My mom was really nice to prepare extra vegetables/fish for me because of my ahem Pescetarian(act one atas) diet. The number one rule is... Eat while you can because you will never know when's the next time you can eat. And.... Always prepare food on standby, even if the food is all soggy and disgusting... That's how desperate we are.

Second day was soooo busy but bar 2 was really quite organised it wasn't much of a problem. But by 2am, my body started aching even without moving much. I needed to stretch and to keep myself awake, I have to force myself to groove along with the music. Thank goodness for the soggy apple pie my tummy was contented the whole night.

Dawn time came (with lesser customers) and Cassandra let me take customers' orders. It was quite fun, but with unreasonable people, it can get really annoying. I was asking the two guys to get off the styrofoam boxes of ice, but one of them got really angsty and poured his beer into the ice box. Zzz, felt quite bad to get the other guys involved. And that was when I understood why all the bartenders/barmaids have this default black face... 👿

It was already morning and I can tell the DJ didn't make the effort for zoukout and reused the mix.. Because I heard something like, "don't fear the night, because you are not lonely tonight". It's already morning hello?

Thunder accompaniment with the last song spinning and 8am comes the downpour. Not just any rain, but heavy downpour. Party goers get good rainy weather to sleep in but we crews had to brave the rain to clear up and pack. That's the fate. Anyway, it's really a miracle that no signs of rain were present throughout the whole 2 days of zoukout.

It was already going 10am when we were about to leave sentosa. Back to zouk, went for breakfast at Afro's, and finally a very kind collegue Matthew sent us home but.. He couldn't start his car after we finished our breakfast at Afro's!! Apparently, the car battery went flat. So he had to use the cables to connect to another car's battery to get the engine started. The guys had to stop the traffic on the other lane for the other car to come forward to connect as the cables weren't very long. It was quite a... Cool experience I guess. At least now I know what to do if that happens to me.

Didn't really have much rest before heading out to watch Hansel & Gretal with Ning. It was quite an entertaining musical that can make Ning and I laugh out loud... But I guess, both of us were really too drained from work to be fully conscious as we watch them perform.

I think... I would rather work for zoukout if I couldn't get complimentary tickets next year. Everything was good! I was happy throughout the entire working experience except the fact that it was a true blue smoke fest for me.
